Valuable parchments darkened by the eruption of the Vesuvius volcano may turn out readable once more, because of 21st century engineering, researchers said on Tuesday. They have reported that an advanced type of X-ray scan has made it feasible to read old parchments melded into fragile sticks of charcoal by the volcano that wiped out the old city of Pompeii.
