Oregon’s newest Poet Laureate, Peter Sears of Corvallis, didn’t suddenly decide to write poetry. “I slowly moved into it,” he says. “The more I did, the more I wanted to do it.” Already a writer when serving in the Army, Sears noticed the compact art form was convenient for a young man with many duties.
“I couldn’t carry a novel [in-progress] around in my pocket, so I wrote short things, and that’s how the poetry started.”
