A Bluegrass State author explains why America shouldn’t begrudge the undefeated Wildcats or their delirious fans
Where I live, April really is the cruelest month—because it means the end of the Kentucky basketball season.

I love this article. I can't think of the last time I read a good, tongue-in-cheek piece, chock full of self deprecating humor. So, gloom and doomers (some of whom have already chimed in), bring it on!BTW, I've never been to KY and have no affiliation with it.

By demonstrating his poor knowledge of history, it is clear Mr. Reece received a meager education at Kentucky. He stated that James Buchanan Duke was the founder of Duke University. In fact the college was founded by Methodists and Quakers in 1838 - 18 years BEFORE James Buchanan Duke was born. Eighty-six years AFTER the college had been founded, Mr. Duke created a private foundation whose mission is to serve the people of North Carolina and South Carolina by supporting selected programs of higher education, health care, children's welfare, and spiritual life. One of the gifts of that foundation was a gift to the college in 1924 to honor James' father, Washington Duke. In recognition of this gift, the college changed its name from Trinity College to Duke. Using Mr. Reece's history skills and logic, he would have concluded that Gerald Chan's 2014 gift to Harvard ($350 million is the largest in Harvard's history) would qualify Gerald Chan as the founder of Harvard.

Dumbest article I have ever read. Another example of pent-up Duke hating . . . cloaked in Kentucky blue.
I'm not interested in rooting for a team who's Coach has had two final fours discredited and for an institution who reeks of NCAA violations. I will root for Michigan State and their coach who does less with more.No hints of scandal? Please....
How many players graduate? How many make it to year two?Just a feeder school for the NBA.
Sorry, I'm for Wisconsin - Go Badgers!!

Awesome piece, Professor!

This is the silliest article I've read in the WSJ in years. I have no issue with fanatic fans, and UK fans deserve to be rabidly proud of their team. Kudos on their season so far and if they win it all, they should be labeled as one of the best ever.Having said that...Mr. Reece could have made his point without tearing down Duke as his final point. The best shot he has is citing something that happened over 20 years ago...seems like he's either jealous of Duke and Dukies or just feeling plain inferior. Either way, too bad the WSJ gave him a forum. Judging from the quality of this professor's work, I don't think UK has worked all the kinks out of their "writing" curricula.

I used to feel bad about Aminu Timberlake, until another Timberlake came around and was featured in a boy band, now I hate him for his last name.
All would be best served to take a page out of Charlie Munger's book and know the other side of the argument before making an opinion on ignorance.Erik didn't have to go back 100 years to find a Duke scandal, covering up a player who was allowed to compete over a year before he was dismissed for sexual assualt and sweeping it under the rug as a team rules violation once it surfaces would certainly tarnish the Duke mantra that ESPN and Vitale have painstakingly created.

UK, in cahoots with the NBA, is destroying college basketball.College basketball should not be a one year internship to the NBA.
April 3, 2015 2:57 AM
A great article that captures the tenacity and spirit of UK fans throughout the country. There isn't another college team that has such a large contingency of fans who regularly meet in homes, bars, away stadiums throughout the nation to cheer the Wildcats. Of course everyone likes cheering for the underdog, so by de facto the Big Blue Nation becomes the poster child for college hoops haters. Stop wasting your time and enjoy the moment for whomever you may be cheering for this weekend. Just let us Kentucky Wildcat fans have our fun too. By the way, many of us cheer as loudly for the Louisville Cardinals except for one game a year!

meh. Calipari is crooked, left two schools behind him with sanctions and vacated wins. His middle name is asterisk. Not the poster boy we should want for a "perfect season." Let's have a little higher standards than "the best college team money could buy." 38-1 or 39-1 would be better medicine. I bet you'd even find people rooting for Duke (really!) over Kentucky . . . .
Why is the WSJ giving this cretin so much space? I will always pull for anybody but Kentucky.

"To suppose that any form of government will secure liberty or happiness without any virtue in the people, is a chimerical idea" James Madison 1788NO wonder the USA has a dictatorial and unConstitutional government, when it's people spend their lives vicariously immersed in watching sports.

I love how the embittered ''purists'' talk about how UK/Calipari are ruining college sports and it should be all about academics, as if some moral absolutes exist on that soapbox. Lighten up. We're talking about nothing but a game, where the goal is to have fun and win within the rules provided. The college game has been a farm league for a long time. Was anyone expecting Lew Alcindor or Michael Jordan to get out of school and live off their degree? It just so happens that a great deal of the "can-go-pro" athletes concentrate wealth at the prep-factories. UCLA did this 45-50 years ago. More players would've left early in those days if the same kind of cash was on the table as we see nowadays. This is the result of the prioritization of this type of entertainment by the economy. Yes, Virginia, it's all about money. But it has been since they first started charging admission and selling broadcasting rights. It's only gotten bigger as Rome matures.GO BIG BLUE!
lots of sec team fans do football like alabama football. sec football is bigger than the nfl to us. but nobody does basketball like kentucky fans. they take over. and i will be pulling for them, even though i am a gamecock through and throughand a shoutout to dawn staley, and our women's basketball team. we are in the final 4 too
Calipari is the biggest cheater in the game. Let's go DEVILS! Calipari the cheater and McConnell the RINO. Now what does KY need?
Bourbon isn't bad for you! It's the elixir of the gods.
We do not like your team because it makes a farce out of the idea of "student" athlete and indeed a mockery of the idea that it is a university's team. Other than that, . .
On Wisconsin! We don't need a heroin epidemic as a reason to support the Badgers. We just love our young men!
April 3, 2015 2:53 AM
Still stewing over Laettner....after all these years....gotta love it! If Duke beats Kentucky---highly unlikely ----the state of Kentucky will self destruct. Life would simply not be worth living!
I'll take a thriving coal industry over another Kentucky championship trophy any day of the week. In any event, On Wisconsin!
"We’re the basketball version of Alabama football."And the guy is proud of THAT? Cretin indeed.
Choke.....Choke....Choke.....Go Bucky, We Got Bo !!!!
I'm not begrudging KY. I have no reason to root for them, or against them for that matter.Shut up and play good basketball.
April 3, 2015 2:52 AM
I'm waiting for a reason why I should root for Kentucky. The most you have is a reason not to hate them.
Calipari cheated at Pitt and UMass. Now he's in the cradle of paying players outside of SMU. I'm sure he feels right at home.
Sometimes this team is completely unstoppable, and other times they barely eke out a win because they can't seem to get their act together. Maybe that's what draws you-- you know they can be beaten, but somehow, they never are.

Okay, I may not cheer for the Russians when they play Kentucky. Otherwise, it's ABK!
As a Lexington resident half the year, I can tell you that this piece is spot on.Go Cats!!!
Difficult for anyone in the Hoosier state to say anything offensive about Kentucky after the RFRA debacle of the last 10 days. Good luck. I just hope we can watch basketball without having any staged, overhyped sit-ins during the games.BTW - I despise the legislation and will work towards removing my state representative, state senator and governor from office in the next election.
How many years before Calipari's record at UK is expunged by some sort of violation that was kept quiet for years? (see UMass and Memphis St).
My Spartans lost to Duke, but I'm still cheering for a B1G Championship.
Your perfect season is built on transients to the NBA, not student athletes. Hope you enjoy it if it happens.
The one-and-done era has dampened my enthusiasm for college basketball and the NCAA tournament. I believe that players should have personal freedom to go directly to the pros if they want to and can. Making them put in a gratutitous college appearance is dumb.
