West Nile infections on the rise in California

California public health officials have warned that the risk of West Nile virus infection could swell further in the coming months, even as the number of cases of the deadly infection has already jumped by nearly 100 per cent from last year.

Fresh figures released by the California Department of Public Health showed that there were 238 cases of West Nile virus infection in the state as of Tuesday, drastically up from 117 cases at the same time last year. The five-year average stands at 74 cases.
