Weekend Box Office: 'Get Hard' Scores $34M, 'It Follows' Nabs $4M

The Will Ferrell/Kevin Hart comedy Get Hard scored a strong $34.6 million opening weekend, including $1.8m worth of Thursday previews and a $12.9m Friday. The gives the film an okay 2.68x weekend multiplier. The $40m R-rated comedy, which earned negative reviews and (I would argue) overblown controversy over its vulgar humor is near the top for both comedic actors. It will be Kevin Hart’s second-biggest star vehicle opening behind the $41m debut of Ride Along and it will be Will Ferrell’s fifth-biggest opening behind The LEGO Movie ($69m), Talladega Nights ($47m), Megamind ($46m), and the $35.5m debut of The Other Guys. So yeah, if you’re only counting live-action stuff, then Will Ferrell just nabbed the third-biggest opening weekend ever. If you want to play the inflation game, it’s still in the upper realms, behind only Talladega Nights, Elf, Anchorman, and Blades of Glory.

That Get Hard, an R-rated comedy with little buzz beyond the “Ferrell and Hart together at last!” factor, opened as well as it did is impressive and frankly shows that their combined star power actively boosting the results beyond a mere one-man show.
