Weekend box office: 'Chappie' shows weak signs of life amid flagging ticket sales

The 2015 box office lost some momentum this weekend. After a couple of months of stellar ticket sales during a typically slow part of the year, "Chappie" eked out a first-place finish with just an estimated $13.3 million in ticket sales — less than the up-to $20 million predicted by some analysts for the sci-fi actioner and even Sony's more modest $14 million forecast.

Receipts are still being tallied, but as a result, the weekend saw about $88.7 million in ticket sales, down almost 36 percent from the same time frame last year, when "300: Rise of an Empire" bowed with $45.0 million and "Mr. Peabody & Sherman" made $32.2 million.
