Web music: Spider silk transmits vibrations across a wide range of frequencies

According to a report from the University of Oxford, researchers from the Universities of Oxford, Strathclyde, and Sheffield have discovered yet another aspect that adds to the versatility of spider silk; it transmits vibrations across a range of frequencies so that sound carries information about prey, mates, and even the structural integrity of a web to the tending spider.

The discovery was made during an evaluation of the vibration response of firing bullets and lasers at spider silk. The researchers found that, when compared to other materials, spider silk can be tuned to a wide range of harmonics.
