Water is the foundation upon which life developed on Earth. But the source of the essential liquid was not clear. One hypothesis was that our planet was dry during the early development stages. Now scientists at Woods Hole Research Center in Massachusetts claim that the water has been on Earth for far longer than previously thought. They believe that we have to thank asteroids for the gift.
The research team analyzed a potential primary source of water, carbonaceous chondrites. These are primitive meteorites that formed well before our planet took shape.
