The Carmichael Show (9 p.m., NBC) – This is one new summer sitcom that I’m hoping gets picked up for a longer run. Comic Jerrod Carmichael plays a young man balancing his life between his girlfriend and his overbearing and opinionated parents (hilariously played by David Alan Grier and Loretta Devine). In the first episode, Jerrod is nervous to tell his parents he’s moving in with his girlfriend, but she insists. The second episode is the real winner, though. A police shooting and a #blacklivesmatter protest interrupt Jerrod’s birthday, when his girlfriend and mom opt for protesting over celebrating.
Extant (9 p.m., CBS) - After a near-death experience, Molly has a terrifying vision. Also, Shepherd’s loyalty to the Global Space Commission is questioned.
