Vatican Receives Ransom Demand for Stolen Michelangelo Letters

(Bloomberg) -- It’s a plot fit for a Dan Brown thriller, blending the theft of two priceless letters by Renaissance master Michelangelo from the Vatican, an 18-year silence and a ransom demand made to a senior cardinal.

The letters -- one of them hand-written by Michelangelo, the other bearing his signature “Michelagnolo” -- were stolen in 1997. The theft was only made public by the Rome newspaper Il Messaggero on Sunday.
