Uzbekistan President Islam Karimov, who has run an authoritarian regime in the impoverished Central Asian nation of 31 million since 1989, is gravely ill, according to a government website.
“Dear compatriots, it is with a heavy heart that we inform you that the health of our President has sharply deteriorated in the past 24 hours to reach a critical state,” the government said. Russian state news agency RIA also published the statement.
