US stocks higher in afternoon trading; GE soars on deal news

NEW YORK (AP) — U.S. stocks moved higher Friday, helped by the news that General Electric would be selling its long-struggling lending business. The market is on pace for its second weekly gain in a row.

KEEPING SCORE: The Dow Jones industrial average rose 92 points, or 0.5 percent, to 18,051 as of 2:20 p.m. Eastern time. The Standard & Poor's 500 index added 10 points, or 0.5 percent, to 2,101 and the Nasdaq composite was up 19 points, or 0.4 percent, to 4,994.
