US FDA Approves 23andMe Genetic Testing For General Public

The US Food and Drug Administration has just approved 23andMe to provide genetic testing to the general public. Alberto Gutierrez, director of the regulator’s office that is in charge of the diagnostic tests, explains, “The F.D.A. believes that in many circumstances it is not necessary for consumers to go through a licensed practitioner to have direct access to their personal genetic information.”

23andMe chief executive Anne Wojcicki comments, “It shows the F.D.A. is willing and supportive of crafting the direct-to-consumer path. It’s a very reasonable first step. I would go so far as saying it’s a very generous first step.”
