Urban Arthropods contribute to waste reduction: Study

Researchers from North Carolina State University working in New York City found that hungry urban arthropods, a group that includes insects and spiders and rodents, play a significant role in the disposal of trash.

The researchers calculated that over a period of five to eight months, bugs are able to remove between nine and 14 pounds of garbage along a single block-long median strip. This means that for 150 blocks of medians, some 1,300 to 2,100 pounds of dry weight are removed each year by insects.
