HAMILTON, Bermuda Oct 17 (Reuters) - Hurricane Gonzalo began pounding the Bermuda coast with high waves, driving rain and gusting winds on Friday as forecasters warned it would be one of the strongest storms to hit the tiny Atlantic island chain in a decade.

Gonzalo was swirling about 75 miles (120 km) south-southwest of the British island chain with sustained winds of 115 miles per hour (185 kph), down from 140 miles per hour earlier in the day, the U.S. National Hurricane Center said.
