LJUBLJANA May 20 (Reuters) - Slovenian state-owned banks Abanka and Banka Celje will merge in the last quarter of this year, creating the second-largest bank in the country, the two banks said in a joint statement on Wednesday.

The merger is part of government plans to consolidate the local banking industry, which is mostly state-owned, and make banks stronger before gradually selling off many of them in the coming years.
