"This is the most prevalent strain in the Pacific Northwest, and we now have a means to protect our students," said Andre LeDuc, UO's executive director of enterprise risk services.

About 15 percent of people who contract bacterial meningitis die. In addition, college students sickened in recent campus outbreaks have lost hearing, suffered brain damage or had their feet amputated, according the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention.
