The North Korean Supreme Court has sentenced a U.S. citizen to 15 years of hard labor. The citizen, Kenneth Bae, is accused of committing crimes against the North and its government. He was held last year when he entered the North Korean city of Rason as a tourist. Bae is known to be a tour operator, but was also accused of taking photos of starving children in North Korea.
The Swedish entourage in Pyongyang has been charged with providing counsel to Bae, given that the Swedish represent the U.S. in the absence of diplomatic ties with the North. The State Department is working closely with the Swedish embassy in order to confirm that the sentence is indeed valid.
