United Continental announced Tuesday that it has replaced its CEO in the wake of an internal inquiry sparked by a federal investigation in regard to the Port Authority of New York and New Jersey, the agency that operates New York's major airports.

The airline says that Oscar Munoz, a board member and former president and COO of CSX, is its new president and CEO, immediately replacing Jeff Smisek, who has stepped down.
