(Bloomberg) -- Fighting continued in eastern Ukraine after government troops relinquished a strategic crossroad town and the country’s leader called for the deployment of United Nations peacekeepers to safeguard a fragile truce.

Ukrainian forces were shelled by pro-Russian separatists near the Sea of Azov port city of Mariupol, military spokesman Anatoliy Stelmakh said Thursday.
