Douglas Carswell, newly elected U.K. Independence Party member of parliament for Clacton, set off for his victory lap of the town. The first thing he passed was the office of the Conservative Party, which until six weeks ago held the seat with its popular member of Parliament, Douglas Carswell.
Carswell defected to UKIP on Aug. 28, saying he had realized his then party leader, Prime Minister David Cameron, wasn’t going to take Britain out of the European Union. He also resigned his seat, triggering a by-election, and yesterday, under his new colors, won 60 percent of the vote.
