Four Iranian ships made reckless maneuvers close to a U.S. warship this week, the Pentagon said Thursday, in an incident that officials said could have led to dangerous escalation.

William Urban, a spokesman for the U.S. Navy’s Fifth Fleet, said the four vessels from Iran’s Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps conducted a “high-speed intercept” and made a close pass of the USS Nitze, an Arleigh Burke-class destroyer, in international waters around the Strait of Hormuz on Tuesday.
