U.S. looks at long-term solution to mining pollution

FARMINGTON, N.M. — While experts continue to monitor conditions on the Animas River after a spill last week at the Gold King Mine in Colorado, federal officials are beginning to discuss solutions to the decades-old problem of pollution in the Upper Animas Mining District.

The New Mexico Environment Department and the state Department of health lifted a ban Friday on using domestic well water from wells in the Animas River floodplain after the spill spewed 3 million gallons of toxic mine waste into the river.
