U.S.-KURDISH OFFENSIVE IN IRAQ. Kurdish ground forces, backed by U.S. warplanes, have launched a new offensive in the Iraqi town of Sinjar, which Islamic State militants seized last year, killing swaths of the local Yazidi population.
