U.S.-Cuba talks cordial, but differences remain

HAVANA — The first half of Thursday's talks between the highest level U.S. and Cuban officials in nearly four decades concluded on a cordial but cautious note: Each side praised the openness but stressed the differences between both countries.

"We have to overcome more than 50 years of a relationship that was not based on confidence or trust," said U.S. Assistant Secretary of State Roberta Jacobson, who leads the U.S. delegation. "There are things we have to discuss before we can establish that relationship."
