Type-1 Diabetes Risk Increased 300% by Childhood Trauma, Study Suggests

A new study has for the first time drawn direct links between traumatic events during childhood and the respective person’s likelihood of developing Type-1 diabetes. While the exact cause or combination of factors that can lead to an individual developing T1D remain largely a mystery to the medical community, evidence suggests that serious events in a child’s life can triple their risk of T1D.

From bereavement to parental divorce to the introduction of a new child and being affected in any way by serious illness, all such scenarios have been linked with an elevated T1D risk in later life.
