During rehearsals for the Broadway adaptation of her best-selling novels “Wolf Hall” and “Bring Up the Bodies,” Hilary Mantel offered a tiny suggestion to actor Ben Miles, who plays her hero, Thomas Cromwell. He is the enigmatic, power-wielding counselor to King Henry VIII.
“Do you know that you keep a knife under your coat, right next to your heart?” she asked him. It didn’t matter if the knife never became visible, she said. “Once the actor knows it’s there, the audience doesn’t have to see it.”
