This extremely promising sitcom continues to explore — so far in well-balanced comic fashion — the real-world problems facing the disabled and their families. Last week, JJ felt the pain of ostracism when his mother got a school event cancelled because it was inaccessible to a wheelchair and he could not attend. This week, JJ and Kenneth take advantage of strangers’ sympathy on an outing of their own, while JJ’s siblings take advantage of his absence by getting their parents to take them paintballing — something they wouldn’t all do together.

Modern Family is off to an uneven start this season, but things could be looking up thanks to the arrival of a great guest: Nathan Fillion as weatherman Rainer Shine. Elsewhere, Lily grows exasperated with her parents and their houseguest — and an exasperated Lily is usually a very funny one.
