TV review: 'Fresh Off the Boat' brings a funny vibe

It has been 21 years since ABC aired “All-American Girl” starring Margaret Cho, the last time a major network broadcast a TV series with predominantly Asian-American lead characters. That’s shameful but at least “Fresh Off the Boat” (8:30 and 9:30 tonight; regular time period 8 p.m. Tuesday starting next week, WTAE) turns out to be a winner.

Based on the memoir by chef/restaurateur Eddie Huang, who briefly attended the University of Pittsburgh, “Fresh off the Boat” tells the story of 11-year-old Eddie (Hudson Yang) in 1995 when his family moved from Washington, D.C.’s Chinatown to suburban Orlando.
