Turbulent Times for Accountable Care Organizations

WASHINGTON -- Accountable care organizations (ACOs) are still feeling their way in the Medicare program, although experts say newly released financial results suggest that the potential for cost savings is there.

In mid-September, the Centers for Medicare and Medicaid Services (CMS) released 2-year results from the Pioneer program, which showed that in their second year, these ACOs qualified for shared savings payments of $68 million out of a total savings of $96 million.
