A new exhibition offers an enlightening look at the role of photographs in some of Toulouse-Lautrec’s most famous paintings

WHEN HENRI DE TOULOUSE-LAUTREC was born, in 1865, the new technology of photography was rapidly developing. By the time he was an art student in Paris in the late 1880s, new box cameras had made “snapshots” possible.
