Togetherness Review: Another Sad, Beautiful Indie Movie

HBO has tried out a number of different slogans over the years, including the current "So Original"—but based on its new Sunday-night lineup, the network may want to consider rebranding with the slogan "Adulthood Is Hard." Sandwiched between this weekend's season premieres of Girls and Looking will be the debut of Togetherness, another half-hour "comedy" about the minutiae of everyday life and the difficulty of cultivating and maintaining relationships as a so-called grown-up. And much like Girls and Looking, it's not your typical side-splitter in the vein of, say, Veep or Silicon Valley.

Hailing from indie filmmakers Jay and Mark Duplass, Togetherness is an almost-perfect blend of emotionally heavy yet sometimes humorous moments that intertwine to present a real, honest, quiet, and often sad picture of adulthood.
