Obesity has significant health-damaging consequences, affecting almost every organ system in the body. It is estimated to kill 112,000 Americans annually and is linked with an increased risk of heart disease, Type 2 diabetes, stroke, gout and certain types of cancer. As a result of the obesity epidemic, an estimated one-third of children born today will develop diabetes and may be the first generation of Americans who have shorter lifespans than their parents.
