Tiananmen Anniversary Inspires Memories, Fears Of New China

The 25th anniversary this week of the Chinese onslaught on Tiananmen revives personal memories as well as concerns about what’s happening now in China. Winston Lord, former U.S. ambassador to China, caught the atmosphere that infused the response of so many who saw the students demonstrating on Tiananmen Square in Beijing in May and the first few days of June 1989 and then experienced the disillusionment of the crackdown, the arrests and executions.
