Thursday letters: Considering the red planet

Regarding "Next frontier for NASA" (Page B8, Sunday), your article about NASA finding a mission to go to Mars brings up the question: What for? There is a much more significant mission for NASA available: returning to the moon, not as tourists, but as colonizers, to create the means to resolve the climate crisis produced by our overwhelming reliance on fossil fuels for our energy.

While the possibility of putting up satellites from Earth to collect solar energy in space and beam it back has been discussed and has been costed out and found to be impractical, the alternative of collecting solar energy on the moon and building the solar collectors and microwave generators there ...
