Three New Cases Reported in Florida

Health authorities in Florida reported that three more cases of leprosy were recorded in Volusia County over the past five months. Doctors suspect that two of the patients may have taken the disease from local nine-banded armadillos, which were reported in 2011 to be the main carriers of the bacteria in the U.S.

Hansen’s disease, commonly known as leprosy, is an extremely rare condition caused by bacteria called mycobacterium lepra. The disease is known since ancient times, but it isn’t yet eradicated as a resurgence seems to be currently hitting the southern U.S.
