‘Theory’ not as brilliant as Hawking

Hollywood is suffering right now, in a way that’s borne out in two very different sorts of films. First, there’s the PG-13-mega-blockbuster, which is usually based on a comic book title or a toy, and is probably a sequel, designed and focus-grouped to sell the maximum number of tickets on a global basis, and with any luck, to license its properties in virtually any and every retail arena. Those are obvious, but they work — the biggest-grossing movie to date this year, and the only one so far to reach a billion dollars in ticket sales on a global scale, is the fourth installment of the “Transformers” franchise.

The second example is far less evident. It’s the rise of the biopic, and its synonymous nature with award-worthy prestige films. Now, none of this is to say that any film that fits this profile is necessarily bad. It isn’t, by any means, and the biopics tend to win out when it comes to quality, but ...
