The Theory That Explains Leonardo DiCaprio’s Inevitable Oscar Win

Two years ago, after an Oscar race won by Matthew McConaughey, I argued that Leonardo DiCaprio was not going to win that year, or possibly any time soon, unless he became a different kind of actor, a much less cool one. Cool guys don’t win Oscars, I argued. I stand by the claim, which is based on a theory I dubbed the “Pitt-Hanks Continuum.” And yes, I stand by it even though Leo is going to win the Oscar this year.

The origin of the theory was an observation made by the director Andrew Dominik about Brad Pitt: “He doesn’t invite you to share his position somehow.” This is the essence of cool performances: they leave you wondering what it would be like to be the character, without ever imagining that you could....
