THEMIS to create most detailed global map of Mars

Thermal Emission Imaging System (THEMIS) has been used to determine the "thermal inertia" of the materials present on the Martian surface.

NASA's Mars Odyssey orbiter has a visual and infrared camera on it. This camera provided multiple temperature images of the surface of Mars, which were taken at night as it is the time during which researchers could easily observe how fast the surface heats up and cools down.
