Theater review: "Nikolai and the Others"

Richard Nelson has populated "Nikolai and the Others," which opened Monday night at the Mitzi E. Newhouse Theater, with 18 speaking characters, and, I'm proud to say, by the end of the 2 1/2-hour play, I'd figured out who most of them were.

It's 1948, and a group of famous Russian expatriates, along with their associates, assistants, significant others and significant exes, have gathered at a rustic Westport, Conn., home for a weekend in the country.
