Tectonic stress responsible for recent quakes in Mammoth Lakes region: USGS

The recently occurred hundreds of earthquakes in Mammoth Lake region of northern California were due to tectonic stress and not because of a potential volcanic activity, experts said.

More than 600 separate tremors were recorded in the region within 24 hours over the weekend. While more than one hundred of the small earthquakes were registered with a magnitude of around 2.0, at least 6 earthquakes had a magnitude higher than 3.0. The highest magnitude was recorded at 3.8.
