BEIRUT — Rebels began heavily shelling Syria's capital Wednesday, killing at least one person and wounding 20 just hours before the arrival of Iranian Foreign Minister Mohammed Javad Zarif, an activist group and state media said.

Zarif is scheduled to arrive Wednesday afternoon in Damascus. Rebels long have been shelling Damascus, but Wednesday's bombardment was the most intense in weeks and lasted for about two hours during the capital's morning rush hour.
