For years, Australia enjoyed immunity from terrorism. Now, it has been hit by a string of incidents in recent months that has forced the country to raise its terrorist threat level.

What's changed? The Islamic State has taken a more aggressive stance against countries that have joined the U.S.-led coalition to defeat it in Syria and Iraq. And Australia, one of the coalition members, has conducted raids against suspected militants who are recruiting there.
