One day after a gunman took 17 people hostage inside a cafe in Sydney, Australia, killing two before police shot him to death, a portrait emerged of the Iranian-born, self-styled Muslim cleric who police say had a history of violent crime and mental instability.

Man Haron Monis, 50, who was reportedly armed with a pump-action shotgun and a machete, stormed the Lindt Chocalat Cafe at the height of rush hour Monday morning, triggering a 16-hour standoff seen by much of the world on television.
