A survivor of Sunday's capsizing of a migrant ship bound for Italy from North Africa gave a chilling account of how smugglers locked hundreds of people in the hold of the ship as officials said the true death toll may never be known.

Survivor estimates of the number of people on board varied, with the Italian Coast Guard saying that the capsized boat had a capacity for `'hundreds" of people.
