Supermensch -- My Choice for Oscar's Best Feature Documentary!

You would not believe the scene at WME's theatre last night for a screening of SUPERMENSCH: The Legend of Shep Gordon, a documentary by Mike Myers, who was present, which is up for contention as best feature documentary in the upcoming Oscar competition. The house was packed with friends and fans of a fellow named Shep Gordon, people who have known him since his college days in Buffalo through a long career managing famous musical acts (Alice Cooper for 40+ years) to the period when he repped almost every famous chef in the world. After the screening, late night host Conan O'Brien led a question-and-answer session with Shep and Mike before the audience, which provoked much good humor. But then again, Shep always provokes good humor... it's part of his incredible charisma. He spotted me and Sonata sitting in the second row and gave me a shout-out, telling everyone that he reads these posts every day and I am his 'guru.' A rare compliment from a fellow who has been subscribing to my Jay Weston's Restaurant Newsletter since it began 30 years ago. He told me that he would be in town for one more day and then, making a flying gesture, he was back to his aerie in Maui. He laughed as he commented he would be lunching the next day at Freds above the Barneys department store, of which I had written a somewhat middling review just that day (showing that he indeed reads all of my posts.) He promised to email me his own impressions.

I reminded him that Chef Nobu Matsuhisa and I had visited his home there a few years ago, after the Hawaiian Food Festival. He invited me to return anytime. Best offer I've had in a long time.
