Houston Ballet has performed Ben Stevenson's production of "The Nutcracker" for 27 years, although the company's history with Tchaikovsky's holiday ballet dates to the 1970s, well before every dance school in the nation adopted it as their rite of winter.

That era's artistic director, Nina Popova, performed "The Nutcracker" with the Ballet Russe de Monte Carlo and knew it could be bread and butter.
