Study Suggests a New Way of Identifying Cancers

According to a new study if tumors can be described by cellular criteria rather than their origin, it may lead to better diagnosis and treatment. Currently cancers are described by the origin of the cancerous cells, for instance lung cancer affects cells within the lungs while throat cancer is from tissues in the throat.

The new research explored the benefits of describing cancer not by its origin but by cellular criteria. According to the study the current criteria used to classify cancer is inadequate.
