Study Suggests Mitochondria, a Energy Source for Cells, Started off As Being Energy Parasites

New study suggests that mitochondria and parasitic bacteria are related. Mitochondria are the energy factories in animal and plant cells. The study by the University of Virginia says that mitochondria, were energy parasites before becoming an energy source for cells. The information was discovered by using state of the art technologies to decode and sequence the genomes of 18 bacteria that are closely related to mitochondria.

It was commonly believed that two simple bacterial cells were swallowed up by host cells, these “simple” cells became part of the host cells and the simple cells became mitochondria or the energy source for the cells.
