A new study of the Andromeda Galaxy—looking specifically at the motions of various stellar populations—has discerned surprising differences from our Milky Way galaxy. And scientists argue that this suggests a much more violent history of mergers with much smaller galaxies that encountered Andromeda in the past.

“In the Andromeda Galaxy, we have the unique combination of a global yet detailed view of a galaxy similar to our own. We have lots of detail in our own Milky Way, but not the global, external perspective,” reports Puragra Guhathakurta, of the University of California-Santa Cruz.
